Dr. Violet D'Souza

BDS, MSc, MS, PhD

Dr. Violet D’Souza is a Dental Public Health Specialist who holds a PhD in Dental Science from McGill University, a Masters in Restorative Dentistry from the University of Helsinki, Finland, and a Masters in Dental Public Health from the University of Iowa, USA. Additionally, Dr. D’Souza completed two postdoctoral assignments, one at the BC Cancer Agency-Victoria and the other at the University of Montreal, Canada. She has extensive experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods and has diverse research interests, including early childhood caries, the oral health of individuals with chronic illnesses, access to care, patient information, health communication, and cancer survivorship. Her research standing in the area of multimedia-based patient information and survivorship care research has been published in high-impact peer-reviewed dental and medical journals. Dr. D’Souza’s most recent work concerns the oral health of individuals with chronic illnesses, especially long-term care residents, individuals with cognitive decline, and those receiving palliative/hospice care. Dr. D’Souza is also affiliated with Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore (India), where she leads multiple research projects as well as teaches and mentors graduate students. At Dalhousie, Dr. D’Souza will primarily be involved in teaching research and dental public health-related courses as well as conducting research that addresses the unmet oral health needs of the geriatric population, cancer survivors, and other marginalized patient population groups.
